The Capstone Project is an independent senior project that challenges students to demonstrate and display their mastery of many of the skills they acquired during their years in the Oxford Public Schools. One of the goals of the Capstone Project is to allow students to take control and have a powerful voice in their own education and development both as learners and individuals. Student choice and personal interest are valued and recognized during each phase of the Capstone Project. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate what they know. Students are able to accomplish and to showcase this achievement while stretching their boundaries of intellect and academic abilities.

The Capstone Project at Oxford High School builds a bridge between the skills a student has learned in the classroom and the real world. The three phases of the Capstone Project are: 1) a research paper on a topic of their choice; 2) fieldwork with a mentor relevant to this topic; and 3) a formal presentation before a panel of judges in which they will communicate and reflect on their experience as a whole. The element of choice is what really lends meaning to the Capstone Project, and it is what makes their project unique.

The Capstone Project is a graduation requirement. This means students must successfully complete a Capstone Project in order to graduate with their class in June in accordance with School Board policy 5123.3 established November 13, 2007. In the event that a student does not successfully complete this project, they will be allowed to do so after their peers graduate and receive their diploma upon its completion.
